Jesus (said): “Let’s go” and he walked ahead of them, behind him the disciples came and they were saying: “I am the first, the leader.” “No, not you, I am the first, the leader.”

The disciples were arguing thus and they arrived at the village of Capernaum and went home. Jesus said to them: “Just now you were arguing. What was it about?”

The disciples looked at him: Oh no, and they kept quiet. Jesus looked at them and sit down and called the disciples around him. (He said): “You want to be the first, the leader? Then you must be the last, humble, you need to serve all the people.”

“I will tell you an example”, and he called a child and took it on his lap. “I tell you that you need to pay attention to the children. That is the same as paying attention to me, I who was sent by God to come, and if you pay attention to me it’s the same as paying attention to God.”

The disciples and Jesus were walking along the road. Jesus went first, followed by the disciples. The disciples began to argue with each other about who was the most important. Finally they all came to a house in the town of Capernaum. In the house Jesus asked the disciples:

— As we were walking, what did you argue with each other about on the way?

The disciples were silent. Jesus sat down, called the disciples to him, and said to them:

— Those of you who want to be first must be last of all and must serve all.

Jesus took a child and placed it in the center. He embraced the child and said. If you love me, you must also be willing to love and care for this child. And the one who loves me deeply also loves my father who sent me.

Barclay Newman, a translator on the teams for both the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version, translated passages of the New Testament into English and published them in 2014, “in a publication brief enough to be non-threatening, yet long enough to be taken seriously, and interesting enough to appeal to believers and un-believers alike.” The following is the translation of Mark 9:33-37:

While at home in Capernaum, Jesus asked his followers,
       “What were you arguing about on our way here?”

They were too embarrassed to reply —
they had been arguing about greatness,
       about which of them was the greatest.

Jesus sat down and told them to gather around.
Then he spoke, “The highest place of honor
       belongs to the lowest slave!”

Then Jesus called a child from the crowd,
       placed his arm around the child, and said,
“When you welcome even a child because of me,
       you welcome both me and the God who sent me.”

Translation commentary on Mark 9:34

Exegesis:

hoi de esiōpon (cf. 3.4) ‘but they kept silent’ (cf. Lagrange ils gardaient le silence).

dielechthēsan (only here in Mark) ‘they discussed’: more expressly ‘they had an argument,’ ‘they had entered into controversy.’ The aorist of the verb, in this context, is to be translated as a past perfect, ‘they had argued.’

tis meizōn ‘who is greater?’ i.e. ‘who is the greatest?’ For use of the comparative form with the superlative meaning cf. 4.31, 32.

Translation:

Were silent is often rendered as ‘said nothing,’ ‘did not reply.’

On the way, as in the preceding verse, should be translated in many languages as ‘when they were going along the road’ or ‘as they were walking along.’

Discussed may require the introduction of direct discourse, in which case the pronouns must be changed, e.g. ‘discussed with one another, Which one of us is the greatest,’ or ‘asked one another, Which of us, do you think, is the greatest’ (in the sense of ‘most important’).

Superlative expressions have a variety of forms, e.g. ‘surpasses all in being…’ (as in many Bantu languages), ‘finds more…’ (Copainalá Zoque), and ‘is the first in being….’

SIL Translator's Notes on Mark 9:34

9:34a

But: The conjunction But indicates a contrast. The contrast is that Jesus expected the disciples to answer his question, but the disciples did not answer.

In some languages, no conjunction is necessary here. For example, the God’s Word says:

They were silent.

they were silent: The phrase they were silent indicates that the disciples did not answer Jesus.

Here are some other ways to translate this:

they would not answer him (Good News Bible)
-or-
They said nothing (New Jerusalem Bible)

9:34b

for: The conjunction for introduces the reason that the disciples were quiet. In some languages, it will be more natural to put 9:34b before 9:34a. See the General Comment on 9:34a–c below for an example.

on the way: The Berean Standard Bible uses the phrase on the way to translate the same Greek phrase that is translated as “on the way” in 9:33c. You may want to use the same phrase in both places. If it is more natural in your language, you can omit this second mention of it.

they had been arguing about: It is implied that the disciples were ashamed of the topic that they had been arguing about. So they did not want to answer Jesus. You may need to make this information explicit. For example:

they did not want Jesus to know that they had argued about…
-or-
they were ashamed to tell him that they had argued concerning…

9:34c

which of them: The context implies that the word which of them refers to which one among the disciples. The New International Version, 2011 edition translates this as:

who

the greatest: The word greatest refers to having the highest status. The disciples wanted to know who among them was the most important person.

General Comment on 9:34a–c

In this verse, 9:34b–c expresses the reason for the result in 9:34a. In some languages, it may be more natural to change the order of these clauses. For example:

34bOn the road, they had argued 34cabout who was the greatest. 34aSo they kept quiet out of shame.
