Following are a number of back-translations as well as a sample translation for translators of Jeremiah 16:8:

  • Kupsabiny: “Do not enter a house where there is a feast to eat and/or drink with those people.” (Source: Kupsabiny Back Translation)
  • Hiligaynon: “You (sing.) do not also enter a house where there is a feast and eat or drink there.” (Source: Hiligaynon Back Translation)
  • English: “And do not go into the houses where people are feasting. Do not eat or drink anything with them.” (Source: Translation for Translators)

Translation commentary on Jeremiah 16:8

Inasmuch as there is a shift from funerals to weddings, Good News Translation makes a separate paragraph for verses 8-9. The transition could also be shown with a sentence such as “And if there is a place where people are feasting, don’t go in and sit down with them to eat and drink.”

On the basis of verse 9, feasting probably refers to the wedding celebration, but this information is not included in any standard translation. The house of feasting simply means “a house where people are feasting” (Good News Translation). The construction is similar to that of “the house of mourning” in verse 5.
