And Gorgias and his men came out of the city to meet them in battle: The story of Judas’ contest with Gorgias was told in 1Macc 4.1-25. In 4.22 Gorgias’ men retreated to the Philistine plain, which is where Jamnia was. Contemporary English Version brings this out by connecting this verse to the previous one as follows:

• 58~So Azariah and Joseph ordered their troops to attack the fortress of Jamnia, 59~where Gorgias and his army were stationed. The enemy came out of the fortress to fight.
