Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 24:12 - 24:13

Jeshebe-ab (verse 13) is called “Ishbaal” in some manuscripts of the Septuagint, which is followed by some modern translations as the more difficult reading (so New Jerusalem Bible, New American Bible, Knoppers). Some manuscripts of the Septuagint do not have either name, and for this reason some scholars think that the original text read “Ishbaal” and then a scribe omitted the name rather than have a priest with the name “baal” as part of his name. However, Critique Textuelle de l’Ancien Testament argues that the name Jeshebe-ab is original and gives an {A} rating to the Masoretic Text.
