So we seized this woman: This correctly represents the Greek. Different words are used for not holding on to the man and for seizing the woman. Good News Translation renders both words the same way: “We tried to hold on to the man … but we were able to hold the woman.” This sounds like Susanna was fighting to get away like the young man, but the men don’t say that. They say only that they caught this woman. Use of the word this is accusatory. It points a finger at Susanna, whereas “the woman” simply tells what happened—or what they claim happened.

These things we testify: This closing statement should sound formal, like legal language. Good News Translation does well with “We swear that our testimony is true.” Contemporary English Version expresses it more simply with “We swear that we are telling the truth.”
