Translation commentary on 3 Maccabees 5:39

But the officials who were at table with him does not necessarily imply a table, only that they were all eating together in the same place. We may render this clause as “But the officials who were eating and drinking with the king.”

Wondering at his instability of mind may be translated “thought that he had lost his mind [or, had gone crazy/insane].”

Remonstrated as follows: Remonstrated means they “talked back” to the king. This clause may be expressed as “and began arguing with the king, saying.”
