For evils worse than those which you have now seen happen shall be done hereafter: By escaping the world, Ezra will avoid the terrible things that lie ahead in the coming two and a half parts of history (verses 11-12). The connector For may be omitted (so Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version). The evils are “terrible things.” In Ezra’s context the clause those which you have now seen happen would refer to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Babylonians, but the readers of this book would be reminded of the destruction of the city and the Temple by the Romans. Good News Bible provides a helpful model for this verse, and so does Contemporary English Version, which says:

• You have seen terrible things happen already, but things worse than these will take place.
