The Hebrew, Latin, and Greek that is translated as “mourn” or similar in English is translated in Newari as “have one’s heart broken” or “have a bursting heart” (source: Newari Back Translation).
Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 10:9
Now ask the earth: See the comments on 2 Esd 7.54 (see also 2 Esd 8.2).
And she will tell you that it is she who ought to mourn over so many who have come into being upon her: Contemporary English Version says “The earth itself will tell you that many of its people have died, and for that reason it deserves to mourn.”
Alternative models for this verse are:
• Think of the earth, and all the many people who have lived here. She [or, the earth] has a right to mourn.
• The earth has a right to mourn because of all the many people who have lived here. Ask her; she will tell you so.
