Arise and take action, for it is your task: The verb Arise can be taken literally, since Ezra was lying on the ground (verse 91), but it can also be taken as an idiomatic expression from Hebrew meaning “Get going” or “Get started” (see the comments on 1 Esd 2.8). The Greek verb rendered take action implies not only getting started but bringing to completion. For it is your task expresses why Ezra should take action. Shecaniah and his fellow Jews expect Ezra to take the lead in solving the problem he is so concerned about. The first half of this verse may be rendered “So, Ezra, get up and get busy and complete this task. You must lead us in this” or “Ezra, you must lead us in this, so get up and let’s get this done.” The Revised Standard Version footnote here gives the reading of some Greek manuscripts that appear to contain a scribal error in which material from the previous verse is repeated. We do not think a footnote is necessary here.

And we are with you to take strong measures: Shecaniah tells Ezra to do whatever is necessary, even if it is harsh, to solve the problem. This clause may be translated “If you think we must act harshly, we will support you [or, do as you wish].”
