The number of these was introduces the list or the inventory of holy objects that were given to Sheshbazzar to take back for the Temple in Jerusalem.
A thousand gold cups, a thousand silver cups, twenty-nine silver censers, thirty gold bowls, two thousand four hundred and ten silver bowls, and a thousand other vessels: The objects included cups, censers, bowls, and miscellaneous vessels. The Greek words for cups and bowls refer to vessels used for drink offerings. We suggest “pitchers” for cups because the Greek word here seems to refer to vessels used to pour out drink offerings. We suggest “shallow cups” for bowls because the Greek word here seems to suggest that they were not deep, but could be used to drink from. Censers were small shovel-shaped implements used for carrying live coals and for burning incense (see Lev 16.12). Good News Bible says “fire pans.” Translators should consult how they rendered this item in the Old Testament (see, for example, Lev 10.1; Num 16.6; Ezek 8.11; and of course, the parallel passage in Ezra 1.9). The names of the utensils in the model below are based on inferences from the Greek words used, not the Hebrew words of the Old Testament.
Good News Bible presents these items as a list, which we suggest as being easier for the reader to grasp. The translator should consult the parallel passage in Ezra, and follow through with whatever the practice has been in other places of the Old Testament where the opportunity for lists arises. Here is an alternative model for this verse:
• Here is a list of the sacred utensils:
1,000 gold pitchers
1,000 silver pitchers
29 silver incense holders
30 shallow [or, small] gold cups
2,410 shallow [or, small] silver cups
1,000 other pieces [or, utensils]
