Jesus and his disciples came to Jerusalem. Jesus went into the Temple courtyard. There he saw many people selling and buying animals and pigeons. There were tables of coin changers. Jesus looked at all this, became angry, and began to drive away both the sellers and the buyers. There was a great commotion. Jesus overturned the tables and overturned the benches of the pigeon sellers. And he forbade people to go through the Temple courtyard to trade.

Jesus began to teach:

— Long ago two prophets in the Bible wrote: “This place will be called the house of the Lord, a place of prayer,” and you have turned it into a gathering of criminals.

Jesus continued to teach. The older priests and teachers of the law heard this and they all got angry and began to discuss how they could kill Jesus. They were afraid that a great many people were listening to Jesus favorably.

Evening came. Jesus and his disciples left the city and traveled back.

The next morning Jesus and his disciples left the village of Bethany and traveled on the road. Jesus was hungry. Jesus saw in the distance a fig tree with thick foliage. Jesus approached the tree to see if there was any edible fruit on it. Jesus went up to the tree and examined it, but there was no fruit, only leaves. The time for fruit had not yet come. Jesus said to the tree, “There will never be any fruit on you!” The disciples were confused.

Jesus and His twelve disciples were approaching the city of Jerusalem. In front of Jerusalem there is a mountain called the Mount of Olives. There are two villages near the mountain, Bethphage and Bethany. Jesus called the two disciples to him and said to them:

— Go to that village over there. There is a young donkey there. None of the people have ever ridden it before. The donkey will be tied up. You will untie him and bring him here. If, when you untie him, people will be displeased and will ask, “What is this for? Why are you untying him? What are you doing?”, answer them, “Our master needs this donkey,” and then people will allow it.

The two disciples went to the village, and there they saw a donkey tied at the gate. The disciples began to untie it. People saw it, started to come up and asked, “Why are you doing this? Why do you untie it?” The disciples answered as Jesus told them to. Then the people allowed it. The disciples brought the young donkey to Jesus. The disciples took off their cloaks and put them on the back of the donkey. Jesus sat on top and rode on top of the donkey. Many people gathered around. Many took off their cloaks and laid them on the road in front of Jesus. Others cut palm branches and laid them on the road. Jesus was riding on a donkey, and the people crowded around him, shouting:

— Jesus! Glory to you! May God bless you! You have come by the will of the Lord God! God bless you! You will reign! You are a descendant of King David. You will also reign! God’s glory is in heaven!

And Jesus continued to ride on the young donkey. Then Jesus entered Jerusalem. He went into the temple and looked around. It was late in the evening. Jesus and the 12 disciples traveled back to the village of Bethany.

Jesus and his disciples came to the city of Jericho. After a while they left the city. Jesus was followed by a large crowd of people. By the side of the road where Jesus was walking with the crowd behind him, a man named Bartimaeus was sitting. He was blind, a poor beggar, and he was sitting there begging for alms. He heard that a crowd was passing by, and in it came Jesus from the city of Nazareth. Then he began to shout:

— Jesus, descendant of King David! Please have mercy on me!

The people around him forbade him to shout. But the beggar shouted even louder: “Jesus, descendant of David! Please have mercy on me!”

Jesus stopped and said: “Bring the blind man to me.” The men came to the blind man and said, “Get up, Jesus is calling you.”

The blind man got up, took off his cloak, and came to Jesus.

Jesus asked:

— What do you want me to do for you?

The blind man answered:

— Teacher! I want to see.

Jesus said:

— Your faith has saved you! Go!

The blind man’s eyes opened and he began to see clearly. He was very happy. Jesus went on and the blind man followed Jesus.

Two disciples, the brothers James and John, sons of Zebedee, said to Jesus:

— We want to ask you to do one thing for us.

Jesus said:

— What do you want to ask me to do for you?

Brothers:

— In the future, when you are glorified and gain power and glory and sit on the throne, let us sit beside you, one on your right hand and one on your left.

Jesus said:

— Do you know or do you not know that I have many sufferings ahead of me? Will you be able to walk the same path — numerous sufferings, pain, death. Will you be able to endure it all?

The two brothers said:

— Yes, we are ready, we can.

Jesus said:

— Yes, different and numerous sufferings will I have. The same sufferings you will have. I will accept suffering, pain, death. In the same way you will have it. But, I don’t decide who gets to sit next to the throne. God decides that.

The other ten disciples heard Jesus talking to these two disciples and became angry.

Jesus called them over and said:

— With the Gentiles, the rulers subdue, humiliate the rest of the people. Do not do as they do. Remember, the one of you who wants to be superior, who wants to be the first, he must be inferior, like a servant, helping the others, taking care of them.

I, the Son of God who became a man, I have not come to subdue and humiliate, I have come to be lower, as a servant, ready to care and help. Even my life I am ready to give for the salvation of all people.

Here is the Temple. There Jesus was teaching people in the courtyard. He asked his listeners this question:

— The scribes teach that Christ is a descendant of King David. I ask you: “How is this so?” Long ago, when the Spirit of God entered into David and filled him, he wrote this:

— God said to my lord:

— Sit next to me, to my right. I will throw all your enemies at your feet, and you will be in charge.

So it is written. And how, Jesus asks, could David call his distant descendant “my lord”? David was ready to submit to this lord. How is that possible?

All the people around agreed and listened with great pleasure.

A man ran up to Jesus, knelt down before him and said:

— You are a good teacher! I want to have eternal life! What do I have to do to get it?

Jesus:

— Why do you call me “good teacher”? In the whole world, God alone is good. You know God’s commandments, don’t you? Don’t murder. Don’t violate marital fidelity. Don’t steal. Don’t cheat other people. Respect your father and mother.

That man said:

— Master! I have been practicing all these commandments since my childhood. I obey all the commandments.

Jesus looked at him. He liked the man. Jesus said:

— One thing is lacking in you. Go and sell everything you have. Give all the money you have to the poor. Your wealth will be in heaven. And when you have distributed everything, come and follow me.

The man was very sad and went away sad. This man had many houses, much land, much livestock. He had a great deal of wealth.

Jesus said to the disciples:

— It’s very hard and difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

The disciples were confused.

Jesus said:

— My children, it is very hard and difficult for such a man to enter the kingdom of God. You know that it takes effort to thread the eye of a needle. Imagine that you have to thread a camel with its two big humps into the eye of a needle. It is very hard and difficult to do such a thing. And it is even more difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.

The disciples were confused and began to say:

– Who then can be saved?

Jesus said to them:

The disciples were confused and began to say:

— Who then can be saved?

Jesus said to them:

— If you try to enter the kingdom of God by yourselves, it is impossible. God alone can provide the way there.

Peter said:

— We have left everything and are ready to follow you.

Jesus said:

— I tell you precisely that the person who will leave his brothers, his sisters, mother and father, children, and fields and will be ready to follow me, who is ready to testify about Jesus in front of everyone, such a person even in his lifetime will receive a hundred times more houses, brothers, sisters, more fields, mothers, children, but will also receive many sufferings, but such a person will have eternal life.

And Jesus also said:

— He who now holds a high position, will therefore be humbled. And he who is now humbled will be exalted!

Parents were bringing their little children to Jesus. They wanted him to touch the children and bless them. So the children began to run to Jesus. And Jesus’ disciples saw this and began to stop the children, not letting them in, scolding them. Jesus noticed this, became indignant and said to the disciples:

— Why are you stopping the children? Let them come to me. Do not stop them! I tell you that there are those whose hearts are pure, and they believe in God as children. To them will be given the kingdom of God. I tell you that a person whose heart is pure and who believes in the Kingdom of God like a child, such a person will be able to enter the Kingdom of God.

Jesus called the children, hugged them, blessed them with the touch of His hands, and spoke good words to them.
