Translation commentary on 1 Esdras 5:24 - 5:25

The priests …: These two verses give the names of priestly families (of the tribe of Levi) and the number in each family who returned to Jerusalem. Good News Bible is right in introducing some explanatory matter here, saying “The following is the list of the priestly clans that returned from exile.” For priests see the comments on 1 Esd 1.2.

The sons of Jedaiah the son of Jeshua, of the sons of Anasib probably means the Jedaiah family members were descendants of Jeshua and Anasib (so Good News Bible). This Jeshua is probably not the same person named “Jeshua” in verse 5.

For these two verses compare the parallel lists in Ezra 2.36-39 and Neh 7.39-42, which are almost identical. See also Ezra 10.18-22.

An alternative model for verses 24-25 is:

• 24 Here are the priestly families who returned from exile, and the number of people in each one:

• Jedaiah (descendants of Jeshua and Anasib) – 972

• Immer – 1,052
25

• Pashhur – 1,247

• Harim – 1,017
