Jesus said to his disciples:

— There goes a man approaching.

It was a man named Judas. He was one of the 12 disciples. He was approaching. And with him was a large crowd of people with swords, spears, and wooden clubs. Why were they walking with Judas? The leaders, the high priests, and the teachers of the law had assigned these people to follow Judas, the real traitor. He had agreed with them that whoever he kissed should be seized and tied up. That was his agreement with them. Judas approached Jesus, greeted him as “teacher,” and kissed him on the cheek. And immediately the people around Judas attacked Jesus. One of the disciples, who was standing next to Jesus, cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant.

Jesus said to the crowd:

— Why did you attack me? Am I a robber? Why do you need swords, wooden stakes? If you decided to seize me, when I taught openly in the temple before, why didn’t you seize me then? What is happening now was definitely written in the Scriptures in ancient times.

The disciples, seeing all this, ran away in fear. Jesus was left alone. The crowd seized him. There was a young man there. He had only a cloak on his naked body. He was watching Jesus. They seized the young man, but he wriggled away, threw off his cloak, and ran away naked. And the crowd led Jesus away.

Jesus and his disciples came to a place called Gethsemane. There Jesus said to his disciples:

— Stay here, I’ll go and pray.

He took three disciples with him — Peter, James, John. The four of them went. On the way, Jesus felt a strong anxiety in his heart. He said to the disciples:

— My heart suffers! The time of my death is approaching. You stay here, stay awake, do not sleep. I will go and pray.

Jesus stepped aside, fell to the ground and began to pray:

— My God! Make this terrible suffering pass me by! You are my father! You can do everything. Please, make this suffering not happen to me. But let it be what you want, not what I want.

Then Jesus returned to the three disciples and saw that they were sleeping. He said:

— Peter! Couldn’t you stay awake for just one hour? You, disciples, be attentive, pray! Be prepared for the hour when trouble happens. The spirit is strong, but the body is weak.

Jesus went to pray again. He prayed the same words, then came back and again saw the disciples sleeping. Jesus called them, but the disciples barely opened their eyes, they could not say anything. Jesus went to pray for the third time, and when he returned, the disciples were still sleeping.

Jesus said:

— You’re sleeping sweetly. Enough! The time is coming when sinners will seize the Son of Man. Rise!

The disciples got up and followed Jesus. As they walked, they noticed a man in the distance.

Jesus said to his disciples:

— You see, a man is approaching along the road. He will betray me.

Here is the Mount of Olives. Jesus and the disciples are up there. It is already evening.

— You will soon betray me, scatter in different directions, and I will be left alone. I will tell you that in the Scriptures it was written in ancient times:

“If God kills the shepherd, the sheep will scatter in different directions.”

It is written in the scriptures. I will die, but then I will rise again and go to the region of Galilee. There I will wait for you.

The disciple Peter began to say to Jesus:

— Even if everyone disowns you, I will always have you with me, I will follow you.

Jesus answered:

— This night, before the morning, before the rooster crows twice, you will refuse me three times.

Peter began to speak:

— I will never reject you! I will follow you until death, and will always be with you.

And the other disciples said:

— We will be with you, we will follow you, we will not reject you.

The first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread had begun. This feast lasts only seven days. This feast has been around for a long time. Here is the country of Egypt. The Jews were slaves there. Slavery lasted for many years. A man named Moses freed the Jews from slavery, broke their chains. This is the story of the feast that the Jews still celebrate. On the first day of the feast, the Jews sacrifice a lamb, cook it and eat it in memory of these events.

The disciples asked Jesus:

— Today is the first day of the holiday. Where shall we gather to have a festive meal?

Jesus chose two disciples and said to them:

— Go to the city. There you will see a man with a jug of water. Follow him. He will enter a house. You will tell the owner of the house: “Our teacher asks to give us a room for a festive meal.” The owner of the house will agree and take you to the second floor. There will be a room, large, clean, with dishes and utensils. There you will be able to prepare food for us.

The two disciples went into the city. There they really met a man with a pitcher of water, the owner of the house gave them a room on the second floor; everything happened exactly as Jesus said. The two disciples made all the preparations. Evening came. Jesus and the disciples entered the house, went up to the second floor, sat around the table and began to feast.

Jesus said to his disciples:

— I tell you for sure: one of my disciples will betray me! This man is among us, he eats with us.

The disciples began to look at each other anxiously and ask: “Jesus, am I the one who will betray you?”

Jesus said:

— The man who dips bread into this dish with me, he will betray me.

The disciples were alarmed. Jesus said:

— It is written in the scriptures that the Son of God, who became man, that is, me, must die. But the man who betrays me — woe to him! It would have been better for him not to have been born into this world.

Jesus took the bread, said a prayer of thanksgiving, broke the bread into pieces and began to distribute it to the disciples. The disciples ate the bread.

Jesus said to his disciples:

— This bread is my body!

Jesus took the cup of wine, thanked God and said to the disciples, “Drink this wine.” And the disciples drank wine from the cup.

Jesus said:

— This wine in this cup is my blood.

God makes a new covenant with people. My blood is shed to save many people. I tell you for sure: I will not drink this wine on earth anymore. Then, when the day of the Kingdom of God comes, then I will drink new wine there.

The disciples sang a psalm, went out and climbed the Mount of Olives.

There are two Jewish holidays: Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. They were two days away. The chief priests and teachers of the law gathered and plotted how they could seize Jesus secretly and kill him. They were afraid that if they seized Jesus right now, during these days, the people would hear about it and there might be a riot.

Here is the village of Bethany. There is a house there belonging to a man named Simon. In the past, this man had leprosy and was covered with sores. In this house, Jesus and other people were sitting around a table and were feasting.

A woman had a jug in her hands, and in it was a very expensive fragrant oil made from the nard plant. The woman opened the jug and began to pour the oil on Jesus’ head. The oil began to flow down his face and drip onto his clothes. Everyone around looked at this with displeasure and became angry. They said to each other:

— Why is this woman pouring out such expensive oil? It costs a lot, it could be sold and make a lot of money to give it to the poor, help them.

Everyone was angry and reproached her. Jesus said:

— Leave this woman alone. Stop judging her and scolding her. Don’t. This woman did a good deed for me. You will always have many beggars, but I will not always be. This woman anointed my head with oil, when I will die, I will be wrapped in burial shrouds and anointed with oil. That’s what she did. I tell you for sure: throughout the whole earth they will proclaim about me, and they will always tell about this woman, what she did for me. The story of this woman will never disappear.

One of the 12 disciples named Judas Iscariot stood up and went to the chief priests and made a deal with them to hand over Jesus to them. The chief priests were delighted and promised to give him money for this. He began to wait for a convenient time to hand over Jesus.

Jesus said to his disciples:

— No one knows when this terrible time of suffering will begin, of which I have spoken to you. Neither the angels in heaven know, nor even I, only God knows. But you be careful — watch and pray!

For example, a man, a master, left his house and property, went far away, and ordered his servants to manage the house, guard it and not sleep. In the same way, we are awake. We do not know when the master will return — in the evening? At night? In the morning at dawn? We do not know this. And if the watchman falls asleep, and at that very time the master returns and finds the servant sleeping? What will happen then? Therefore, I am telling you now: one thing is important, that you be awake in your heart.
