Let him that sows be like one who will not reap; so also him that prunes the vines, like one who will not gather the grapes: For grapes see the comments on 2 Esd 9.21. The verb prunes refers to trimming the grapevines while they are dormant in order to promote grape production. Good News Bible combines these two sentences into one statement, which is a helpful model. Contemporary English Version is very similar, saying:

• Farmers must not expect to gather their crops or pick their grapes.
