Translation commentary on Susanna 1:51

If integrated into the book of Daniel: 13.51.

Separate them far from each other, and I will examine them: Daniel wants to question each man individually, out of the hearing of the other. Good News Translation‘s restructuring does not really make clear that the two witnesses are supposed to be out of earshot of each other. One possible approach is:

• Separate the two men. I want to question each one without the other one hearing.

Another possible approach is the model presented by Contemporary English Version:

• Separate the two men who accused Susanna, and take them far enough away so that they can’t hear us. Then I will call them over one at a time and question them.
