Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites: Verses 31-32 conclude the account of the military campaign against the Amorites, so the conjunctions Thus and “So” (Good News Bible) render well the Hebrew waw conjunction (literally “And”) at the beginning of this clause. Another possible connector is “In this way.” Dwelt renders the same Hebrew verb translated “settled” in verse 25 (see the comments there). New Revised Standard Version, Good News Bible, and New International Version use the verb “settled” here. In chapter 32 we read that the tribes of Reuben and Gad wanted to settle in this captured Transjordan area rather than enter the land of Canaan.
