I washed myself: The washing is to remove ritual defilement after touching a dead body (see Num 19.11-13). Good News Translation makes this clear with “so as to purify myself.”
Ate my food in sorrow may be rendered “ate the festival meal, but I was very sad” (Contemporary English Version).
