Translation commentary on Tobit 12:4

Brought back is not a third occurrence of the same verb used in the previous two verses. Another expression is used here, but it means substantially the same. A problem here is that all the emphasis seems to be on Raphael, as if Tobias were not involved. Good News Translation eases this by translating “Give him half of what he helped you bring back.” It could be, however, that Tobit and Tobias are gratefully attributing all the success of the mission to Raphael. Contemporary English Version follows the interpretation of New Revised Standard Version with “he deserves to get half of everything he brought back,” and this is the better course to follow.
