If integrated into the book of Daniel: 13.3.

Her parents were righteous: In this context the word righteous has the meaning “observant,” that is, they were careful to live according to Torah, the Law of Moses. People who carefully follow whatever regulations for life their religion lays on them are said to be observant. “Devout” (Good News Translation) shifts the focus somewhat, but will be more meaningful to more English readers than “observant.” That they were “Jews” (Good News Translation) is quite clear from the context, but specifying it helps the reader understand the situation, and helps give the adjective “devout” the implications of “observant.”

Taught their daughter according to the law of Moses: The Mosaic Law gives no specific instructions as to how people should teach their children, simply that they should teach them; see Deut 4.9; 6.6-7. The point of the clause here is as Good News Translation expresses it: “brought up their daughter to live according to the Law of Moses.”

Contemporary English Version connects verse 2 with the present verse in a helpful way:

• … Susanna faithfully worshiped the Lord and obeyed the Law of Moses, just as she had been taught by her parents, who were very religious.
