It does not seem necessary to make the transition to verse 27 as Revised Standard Version For does, since no cause and effect relation between verses 26 and 27 seems indicated.

Deliver translates the verb translated “help” in 12.1.

For a humble people see comments on “the afflicted” in 9.12, and on “the meek” in 10.17, where the same Hebrew term occurs.

Haughty eyes is a figure for pride, arrogance; see Proverbs 6.17, where “haughty eyes” is one of the seven things that God hates.

The verb bring down translates the causative form of a verb meaning “to be low.” It means to humiliate, shame, defeat (in contrast with deliver in line a). Haughty eyes in Hebrew are “high eyes,” and so the act of “bringing down” or “lowering” is a play on the idea of downward movement. In some languages this same wordplay can be maintained; for example, “but you lower the heads of those who carry them high” or “but you bend people down who put their noses up.”
