For Praise the LORD, see comments at the end of 104.35. This stands as a title in Hebrew; it is not part of the acrostic structure.
In verse 1c in the company of the upright, in the congregation is better rendered by Good News Translation as “in the assembly of his people”; this translates “the council of the righteous and the congregation”–by which one group is meant, not two different groups, as New International Version has it (“in the council of the upright and in the assembly”; see also Traduction œcuménique de la Bible); see similar language in 22.22. New Jerusalem Bible has “in the assembled congregation of the upright,” and Bible en français courant “among the assembled faithful.” Biblia Dios Habla Hoy keeps the redundancy, “in the meeting of the honorable men, in the whole community.”
The Great … works that Yahweh does (verse 2) are here his deeds on behalf of his people, and not creation. In verse 2b studied translates a form of the Hebrew verb meaning “to seek”; Bible de Jérusalem translates “worthy of study.” The verb form translated who have pleasure in them is translated by Bible de Jérusalem, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible, and Biblia Dios Habla Hoy “who love them”: “all who love them study them.” But it may be difficult to use the verb “to study” with the object “the wonderful works of Yahweh”; what is meant is “to study the record (or, history) of his wonderful works”; or else, meditate upon, think about (New International Version “they are pondered”). New Jerusalem Bible “within reach of all who desire them” is not too good; New Jerusalem Bible is better: “to be pondered by all who delight in them.”
In verse 3a the psalmist attributes the abstract qualities of honor and majesty to Yahweh’s deeds. This may be difficult to express in some languages, and a more natural statement may be “Yahweh’s works reveal (or, demonstrate) his honor and majesty.” In some languages it will be necessary to shift from the noun forms honor and majesty to verbs; for example, “All he does shows how people respect him and that he is powerful like a king.”
In verse 3b his righteousness is parallel with his work in line a; New Jerusalem Bible has “beneficence,” Dahood “generosity,” and Bible en français courant “he is always true to himself.” His righteousness endures must sometimes be recast to say, for example, “his goodness lasts for ever” or “he is good to people always.”
