Translation commentary on Numbers 15:13

All who are native shall do these things in this way: For the word native, which refers to all the ethnic Israelites, see 9.14. It should be clear in the translation that the phrase these things in this way refers to all the instructions about animal sacrifices and their supplemental offerings that were given in verses 3-12.

In offering an offering by fire, a pleasing odor to the LORD: For the general Hebrew term rendered offering by fire, see verse 3. Good News Translation says “food offering,” as in verse 3, but this rendering could easily be misunderstood as referring only to the grain and drink offerings, and not to the animal sacrifices. Bible en français courant and Traduction œcuménique de la Bible use the general term “sacrifices” to include the animal sacrifices, and so do De Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling and Willibrordvertaling with “sacrifice.” For a pleasing odor to the LORD, see verse 3. De Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling treats this phrase as synonymous with an offering by fire in the following helpful model for this verse: “This applies to every born Israelite who wants to present a sacrifice to the LORD, a fragrant gift which pleases him” (similarly Willibrordvertaling).
