The crowd … were astonished at his teaching is almost a word-for-word repetition of Matthew’s comment at the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount (7.28). Mark does not make this observation here, though he does do so at 11.18. Luke summarizes the reaction toward Jesus’ teaching even more emphatically than Matthew (20.39-40).
