Swearing falsely—in any of all the things which men do and sin therein: this seems to be a summary statement, but Revised Standard Version takes the swearing falsely as being in apposition with lied about it. Others, such as New English Bible, take it as a part of the summary statement that follows and so translates “and swears a false oath in regard to any sin of this sort that he commits” (see also New Jerusalem Bible at 5.22). This interpretation is followed by Good News Translation and seems preferable.
