Make atonement for the sanctuary … for the tent of meeting and for the altar: as seen in the literal rendering of Revised Standard Version, the verb make atonement is repeated three times. But this repetition may be reduced as in Good News Translation, if it is unnatural in the receptor language. Compare verse 16.
The sanctuary: this refers to the Most Holy Place. See verse 2.
The tent of meeting: or “the rest of the tent of meeting,” since the Most Holy Place already mentioned was also a part of the Tent. See verse 16.
All the people of the assembly: the assembly or “community” refers to Israel. In some translations it may be advisable to make this explicit; for example, “all the people of Israel” or “the whole tribe of Israel.”
