Translation commentary on Joshua 12:6

This verse is a summary statement of the conquest of the land east of the Jordan, and the division of the territory among the two and one-half eastern tribes (see detailed account in 13.8-32).

These two kings were defeated by Moses and the people of Israel may be stated in the active: “Moses and the people of Israel defeated these two kings.”

For most readers, gave … to and to be their possession will be synonymous in meaning. Therefore the meaning may be expressed, “Moses, the LORD’s servant, divided their land among the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh.”
