Translation commentary on Jeremiah 51:50

As stated above, this passage is for the people of Israel who are in Babylonia. Good News Translation makes that clear.

You that have escaped from the sword: The sword is here used symbolically of death: “You have escaped death!” (Good News Translation). See 5.12. Bible en français courant uses an idiomatic expression that conveys the same meaning: “You who have escaped his blows.” Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch has “But you other Israelites, who have escaped with your life.”

Remember the LORD from afar is translated “Remember the LORD in a distant land” by New International Version. Some translators may wish to combine this line with the following line and render “Here in a foreign land think about the LORD and about Jerusalem!”

Quoted with permission from Newman, Barclay M. and Stine, Philip C. A Handbook on Jeremiah. (UBS Helps for Translators). New York: UBS, 2003. For this and other handbooks for translators see here .
