Translation commentary on Jeremiah 48:35

And I will bring to an end in Moab … him who …: This is to be taken collectively, as in Good News Translation “I will stop the people of Moab….” A number of versions understand the expression to mean “I will put an end to [that is, I will kill] the people of Moab who….” Of course, even the Good News Translation translation would carry this sense.

Says the LORD: See 1.8. Even though in the text it is in the middle of the pronouncement, Good News Translation moves it to the end, which would be more natural in many languages.

Offers sacrifice: This refers to “burnt offerings” (Good News Translation), in which the entire offering was consumed upon the altar. See 6.20.

High place: See 7.31.

Burns incense means “offers sacrifices” (see 1.16).
