Translation commentary on Jeremiah 31:33

The covenant: See verse 31.

Says the LORD: See 1.8.

Put my law within them and write it upon their hearts mean essentially the same thing. Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch renders “I shall write my law not on stone tablets, but on their heart and mind.” This is legitimate, since in Hebrew psychology within them would represent the seat of emotions, while heart would be the equivalent of “mind” in the modern world (see 3.17). Another way to express this is “I will make my law part of their thinking and feeling.” See Deut 6.6; 30.11, 14.

My law here represents the total content of God’s revealed will and purpose for his people. Law is first used in 2.8.

Their God … my people: See 7.23; 11.4; 24.7; 30.22.
