Translation commentary on Ezekiel 21:32

You shall be fuel for the fire means the sword, that is, Nebuchadnezzar and his people, will be destroyed by fire.

Your blood shall be in the midst of the land means Nebuchadnezzar will die in his home country.

You shall be no more remembered points to total and permanent destruction of Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom—all memory of it will be obliterated. In the ancient Near East this is the worst judgment that a person could suffer.

For I the LORD have spoken: See verse 17. The prophecy ends with an emphatic statement that God himself said it, stressing that it is true.

The last part of this prophecy (verses 29-32) is addressed to the sword. Therefore it applies to the Babylonians, not the Ammonites. Unfortunately, when Ezekiel uses the word “sword” as a symbol for Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians, this makes the meaning of verses 29-32 unclear and difficult to follow. Scholars suggest that Ezekiel did this deliberately so that the Babylonian authorities would not realize that he was prophesying the total destruction of Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom. This is a possible explanation for the obscurity of this passage. It is best if translators can maintain this obscurity. One way of doing this is to repeatedly address the sword. A model for this in verses 30-32 is:

• 30 Put the sword back in its holder. O sword, I will punish you in your home country, in the land where I chose you to work for me. 31 O sword, I am very angry with you. I will burn you with fire and hand you over to savage men who are good at killing. 32 O sword, your blood will flow out in your home country, you will burn up in the fire, and nobody at all will remember anything about you. I am Yahweh. This is what I have spoken.”

Another possible model is:

• 30 Return the sword to its sheath [or, cover]. You, O sword, I will punish you in the place where I created you, in the land where you are from. 31-32 I will make you feel my hot anger, and my anger will burn you like a breath of fire. You will burn up in the fire as I hand you over to violent men who are experts in killing. They will kill you in your home country. Nobody will remember anything about you. For I, Yahweh, have said this.”
