The precise meaning of the message to Archippus (who appears also in Philemon 2 as one of the recipients of that letter) is impossible to determine. There are various interpretations about the task or “ministry” (Greek diakonia) that Archippus was to complete, but no one can be dogmatic. It appears to be some specific matter, not Archippus’ ministry as a Christian.

The sequence of two imperative expressions, one consisting of direct discourse included within another imperative, may be quite difficult to understand, especially when the passage is read aloud. Those who hear it read may not understand at first that the direct discourse applies simply to Archippus rather than to the believers in Colossae. Therefore, it may be better, in this instance, to use indirect discourse, for example, “tell Archippus that he must finish the task which he was given in the service of the Lord” or “… as one who is to help the Lord.”
