Good News Bible inserts a paragraph break here, which is helpful.

But making a high resolve, worthy of his years and the dignity of his old age and the gray hairs which he had reached with distinction and his excellent life even from childhood: The connector But introduces the contrasting response of Eleazar. For making a high resolve, Good News Bible says simply “Eleazar made a decision.” It omits the adjective high. Better models are “He firmly made up his mind” (Contemporary English Version) and “he made a firm decision.” The phrases his years, his old age, and the gray hairs mean roughly the same thing, but they are given for emphasis, and translators should avoid the temptation to combine them into one phrase, or even two, as Good News Bible has done. The following model for the first half of this verse keeps the three phrases: “But Eleazar made a noble [or, heroic/ honorable] decision. It was a decision worthy of his many years, worthy of his gray hairs, and worthy of the long and distinguished life that he had lived, from his childhood all the way to his old age.”

And moreover according to the holy God-given law is literally “and moreover worthy of the holy God-given legislation.” This phrase may be rendered effectively by saying “More important, his decision was worthy of the holy Law that God had given his people” or “More important, he firmly made up his mind [or, firmly decided] to obey the holy Law that God had given his people.”

He declared himself quickly, telling them to send him to Hades: Good News Bible begins this last part of the verse with the connector “so,” which is helpful. He declared himself quickly may be expressed as “So he immediately said.” Hades is the realm of the dead, and here is simply a poetic way of saying “death.” The clause telling them to send him to Hades is indirect discourse in Greek (as in Revised Standard Version), but the next verse begins a speech by Eleazar quoted in direct discourse. Good News Bible begins the direct discourse at the end of this verse, which works well. We recommend that translators follow it. An alternative model that uses direct speech is “So he replied to them without hesitation, ‘Kill me now.’”
