Some of those who followed him came up to mark the way, but could not find it: This verse is not perfectly clear, but it seems to say that some of the men who had come along with Jeremiah went back later to mark the way to the cave. The next verse seems to indicate that they did not do this while they were going down the mountain, but perhaps they tried to do it after returning to Jerusalem. Goldstein expresses this verse clearly and his translation may serve as a model: “Some of those who had come along went back to mark the path, but they could not find it.” Another possible model is:
• Some of those who had come along with Jeremiah went back to mark the way to the cave, but they could not find it.
