For the righteous, who have many works laid up with thee, shall receive their reward in consequence of their own deeds: The connector For may be rendered “However” (see our models below). Ezra contrasts the sinners of verses 31-32 (among whom he places himself) with people who earn a reward from God because of their righteous acts (compare 2 Esd 7.77; Matt 6.20). Here are possible models for this verse:
• Righteous people, however, have done so many good things that you will reward them because they have earned it.
• However, you will always reward people who have done so many good things. They deserve it.
