Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 4:4

If you can solve one of them for me: The verb solve may be rendered “explain” (Good News Bible). The pronoun them refers to “problems” in the previous verse. This clause may be translated “If you can explain any one of these [problems] for me.”

I also will show you the way you desire to see: The way you desire to see refers to Ezra’s questions about God’s ways in the previous chapter. Possible models for this clause are “I will give you the answers you want” and “then I will answer your questions about how God treats people” (Contemporary English Version).

And will teach you why the heart is evil: For the heart as evil, see the comments on 2 Esd 3.20. Why the heart is evil may be expressed as “why people have an impulse to do evil.”
