Let no sinner say that he has not sinned: Compare Jer 2.35; 1 John 1.8. This clause may be rendered “Sinners should not deny their evil ways” (similarly Contemporary English Version).

For God will burn coals of fire on the head of him who says …: Compare Pro 25.22; Rom 12.20. The conjunction for introduces the reason why they should not deny their sins. Contemporary English Version renders it “In fact.” Good News Bible believes coals of fire is an image for “fiery shame,” but it is better to view it as an actual punishment (see the models below). Revised Standard Version‘s footnote here involves a translational matter, so it is not needed.

I have not sinned before God and his glory: Good News Bible uses indirect speech here, which other languages may find helpful. Glory may be translated “majesty” (Good News Bible).

Here are possible models for this verse:

• People should never say that they have never sinned against God and his majesty. God will pour burning coals on the head of anyone who says such a thing.

• Sinners should not deny that they have ever sinned. In fact, God will torture them by pouring burning coals on their heads if they say that they have not sinned against him or his glory.

• … on their heads if they say, “I have never sinned against God or his glory.”
