Then they rent their clothes, and mourned with great lamentation, and sprinkled themselves with ashes: Judas and his men tore their clothes and sprinkled ashes on themselves because of sorrow (see the comments on 1Macc 3.47). Mourned with great lamentation probably happened first, so an alternative model for this verse is:

• Judas and his soldiers were so sad they cried [or, wept] loudly. They tore their clothes, then threw ashes upon themselves.
