The guard bore them and brought them back: The guard is the same word as in verse 27. The direct object them refers to the shields.

The guardroom was a place in the Temple where the equipment used by the guards was stored since such items were used only on special ceremonial occasions. New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh refers to this room as “the armory of the guards.”
