Then he called for Solomon his son: Then translates the common Hebrew conjunction. It may be rendered as a temporal connector or left untranslated, depending on which is most natural in the receptor language. He called for Solomon means that David sent one or more persons to Solomon with instructions for him to come to David.

And charged him to build a house for the LORD, the God of Israel: The Hebrew verb rendered charged is stronger than simply “told” (Contemporary English Version, New Century Version). It refers to definite instructions or orders to perform a specific task. Interpreters have noted parallels between David’s charge to Solomon, both privately and before all the leaders of Israel, and Moses’ commissioning of Joshua in Deut 31.7-8. Just as Joshua succeeded Moses and led the people into the Promised Land, so Solomon succeeded David and introduced a new period in Israel’s relationship with God by building the Temple.
