He continued: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as He continued is literally “he was saying” (as in the New American Standard Bible). This word indicates that Jesus continued to speak to his disciples.

7:20b

What comes out of a man: The Greek phrase that the Berean Standard Bible translates as What comes out of a man refers to the words that people say and the actions that people do. These are the things that defile them. See the note on 7:15c.

If a literal translation of this phrase is not clear, it is possible to put the phrase “from the heart” in 7:21a here in 7:20. For example, the Contemporary English Version says:

What comes from your heart

a man: Here, the phrase a man is used in a figurative sense to refer to “a person.” For example, the God’s Word says:

a person

that is what defiles him: This is the same phrase as in 7:15a–b, and you should probably translate it in the same way.
