SIL Translator’s Notes on Luke 24:53

24:53

praising God continually in the temple: This clause indicates that Jesus’ followers were in the temple area very often. They probably came every day and attended all of the meetings when Jews who were in Jerusalem normally came together to worship God. The clause does not mean that they never left the temple area at all.

Some other ways to translate the clause are:

They went to the temple regularly/continually
-or-
And they spent much of their time in the temple area (Translator’s Reference Translation)

praising God: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as praising is literally “blessing,” as in the Revised Standard Version. In this context the phrase “blessing God” indicates that Jesus’ followers were expressing gratitude and praise to God. Some other ways to translate the phrase are:

giving thanks to God (Good News Translation)
-or-
where they praised God (God’s Word)

For more information, see bless, Meaning 4, in the Glossary.

temple: The word temple refers to the temple building and the courtyards that surrounded it. For more information and translation advice, see the note at 18:10a.
