SIL Translator’s Notes on Luke 16:29

16:29a

But Abraham replied: In Greek this verse begins with a conjunction that the Berean Standard Bible translates as But. It introduces Abraham’s reply. This reply contrasted with what the rich man hoped that Abraham would say.

They have Moses and the prophets: The clause They have Moses and the prophets means that the writings of Moses and the Prophets were available for the brothers to read or listen to. Portions from the Hebrew Scriptures were read aloud every Sabbath day in the synagogue. Other ways to translate this are:

They have the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets. (New Century Version)
-or-
Your brothers can read what Moses and the prophets wrote. (Contemporary English Version)

It is implied that these writings would serve as a warning to the brothers. Here is a way to make this explicit:

Your brothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them. (Good News Translation)

Consider whether you need to make this information explicit in your language.

Moses and the prophets: The phrase Moses and the prophets refers to the same thing as the phrase “the Law and the Prophets” in 16:16a.

16:29b

let your brothers listen to them: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as listen here means “pay attention to.” Abraham was saying that the rich man’s brothers should read or listen to someone else reading the message of the Old Testament and then obey it. Other ways to translate this are:

…let them learn from them. (New Century Version)
-or-
They should pay attention to that. (Contemporary English Version)
