Paragraph 1:21–22
1:21a–22c
Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John’s baptism until the day Jesus was taken from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection: The Greek that the Berean Standard Bible translates as one of the men who have accompanied us is more literally “those having accompanied us.” The Greek word that means “to become” (1:22c) connects to it is necessary (1:21a). In the Berean Standard Bible, the middle part of these words explains the kind of man Peter said should be included.
In some languages it is more clear to separate the long description of the man from him becoming a witness. For example:
21–22it is necessary for one of these men to become witnesses with us of his resurrection. He must have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us.
it is necessary: This phrase indicates that there is only right thing to do. For example:
must (Good News Translation)
1:21b
the whole time: This phrase refers to the time described in 1:22a–b. For example:
during the whole time that (Good News Translation)
the Lord Jesus went in and out among us: The Greek phrase that the Berean Standard Bible translates as went in and out is an idiom that means “lived.” Here it may imply moving from place to place. Judas’s replacement must have been with the other disciples of Jesus during all of the time Jesus lived with them. Here are some other ways to translate this clause:
the Lord Jesus associated with us (NET Bible)
-or-
the Lord Jesus was living with us (New Jerusalem Bible)
-or-
the Lord Jesus traveled about with us (Good News Translation)
Lord: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as Lord means someone who has authority over someone or something. Here are some other ways to translate Lord:
Master
-or-
Owner
-or-
supreme Chief/Leader
See how you translated this word in 1:6.
