Translation commentary on Zechariah 8:16 - 8:17

Verses 16-17 do not have a close structural link with verses 9-15, though they are part of the same oracle. In the light of the LORD’s purpose to bless his people again, they sum up the response that the LORD requires from the people. This response is expressed in terms that are strongly ethical in content (compare 7.9-10). As in 7.9-10, these demands take the form of four imperatives, two positive (verse 16) and two negative (verse 17). There is also a chiastic structure (general … particular … particular … general, A-B-B-A) covering the two verses, which commentators do not seem to have noticed.
