And her daughters on the mainland shall be slain by the sword: Her daughters on the mainland were the “settlements” (New International Version, New International Reader’s Version) belonging to Tyre that were on the mainland opposite the island where Tyre was. New Century Version makes this explicit with “her villages on the shore across from the island.” These towns shall be slain by the sword means they “will be destroyed by war” (New International Reader’s Version, New Century Version). Sword is used here figuratively to refer to war in general (see 11.8). It is also acceptable to take her daughters on the mainland as referring to the people in these towns who will be killed (so Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version). If this is done, it is appropriate to keep sword as the instrument by which they will be killed. For those languages that do not use passive verbs, it is acceptable to introduce “the armies of the nations” as the agent (compare verse 8, where the agent is Nebuchadnezzar). A possible model for this clause and the previous one is “She will be the prize that the enemy nations take after defeating her, and they will also kill with their swords [or, in battle] the people in her villages on the shore across from the island.”

Then they will know that I am the LORD: God’s actions of judgment against the people of Tyre will make them recognize and acknowledge his authority. F

Verses 2-6 may be restructured in the same way as verses 3-5 in chapter 25 to express the causative construction most effectively (see the comments there).
