Translation commentary on Jeremiah 35:1

The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD: See 1.4.

Jehoiakim the son of Josiah: See 1.2-3. The temple setting now shifts from the tenth year of Zedekiah’s reign to the latter part of Jehoiakim’s reign, when the Babylonian army had invaded Judea and had forced many of its people to find refuge in Jerusalem. Among them were the Rechabites (verse 2).

The verse may better be restructured, either as in Good News Translation or as:

• This is what the LORD said to Jeremiah when Jehoiakim the son of Josiah was king of Judah.
