Hast thou eyes of flesh?: to have eyes of flesh means to see (understand) things in a human way, as Job does. Good News Translation has “Do you see things as we do?” meaning “Do you understand things as we humans do?” Dost thou see as man sees? does not go beyond the first line in intensity or in emphasis. Neither does it serve to refine the focus of that line. Therefore Good News Translation has reduced the two lines to one.

Job’s question in the first line may be expressed “Do you see things the same way a person sees them?” “Do you understand things the way we do?” “Are your eyes like our eyes?” If the translator preserves the two lines, the first may be expressed, for example, “Do you see things the way a human being does,” and the second, “and do you understand as a person does?”
