Azariah the chief priest, who was of the house of Zadok, answered him: Azariah may have been the grandson of the High Priest mentioned in 2 Chr 26.17. For the chief priest, see the comments on 2 Chr 19.11. The text also describes him as being of the house of Zadok, which means that he belonged to the family of a man named Zadok or was a descendant of a person by that name. Most likely the Zadok named here was one of King David’s High Priests (see 1 Chr 18.16).

Since they began to bring the contributions … we have eaten … and have plenty left … so that we have this great store left: The Hebrew words translated plenty and great store refer to the same oversupply of food, and the two expressions may be reduced to one in translation if necessary. The whole quotation is somewhat repetitious and may have to be translated in a less redundant fashion.

The direct quotation of Azariah’s words may have to be made into indirect discourse in certain languages. One possible model that does this is:

• Azariah … responded that since the people started bringing their contributions to the Temple of the LORD, there had been enough to eat and plenty left over, because the LORD had blessed his people, and there was a large amount remaining.
