And of all my sons (for the LORD has given me many sons): See 1 Chr 3.1-9. As Revised Standard Version shows with the use of parentheses, the clause for the LORD has given me many sons is a parenthetical statement. Good News Translation avoids the use of parentheses by restructuring the verse, as do a number of other modern versions (so Contemporary English Version, New Century Version, Bible en français courant, Parole de Vie). This may also be a good idea for many other languages where parenthetical statements present a variety of problems.

He has chosen Solomon to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel: God is the real ruler of Israel, and Solomon will sit on God’s throne as God’s representative (see also 1 Chr 29.23). To sit upon the throne means “to be the king” or “to rule over.” Different languages will have different ways of expressing this idea. American Bible expresses the last clause of this verse as follows: “to occupy the throne of Yahweh’s rule over Israel.”

For this whole verse New Century Version has:

• The LORD has given me many sons, and from those sons he has chosen Solomon to be the new king of Israel. Israel is the LORD’s kingdom.
