Translation commentary on Numbers 28:16

Verses 16-25 deal with the Passover and the offerings at the Festival of Unleavened Bread and are largely parallel to Lev 23.5-14. Translators may begin a new paragraph here with a subheading (see the introductory comments on this section). Good News Translation‘s heading for these ten verses is “The Offerings at the Festival of Unleavened Bread.” Another possible title is “The Passover and the Sacrifices during the Festival of Unleavened Bread” (similarly Contemporary English Version).

On the fourteenth day of the first month is the LORD’s passover: See Lev 23.5. The Hebrew calendar is based on the agricultural seasons and begins in the early spring, so the first month corresponds to mid-March to mid-April (see 9.1). For passover see the comments on 9.2. The LORD’s passover may be rendered “The Passover [Festival] in honor of the LORD” (Good News Translation, Bible en français courant, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible, De Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling), “the Passover for the LORD” (La Nouvelle Bible Segond, Zürcher Bibel, Bijbel: Vertaling in opdracht van het Nederlandsch Bijbelgenootschap, Willibrordvertaling), or “the festival in remembrance of the LORD’s passing over his people.”
